| On the other hand, we've had pretty great results with the open source software we're using. The authors of The Lounge have been very helpful when I've been working on new features, even those that are only useful for SkipIRC and won't be useful upstream. When a security issue was found in atheme (our IRC services package) we were able to work with the atheme authors to ensure that we were unaffected. A while back, I casually mentioned a small quality-of-life improvement feature in atheme's primary IRC channel. Today (June 5) I woke up to a PM from Sadie, the primary maintainer of inspIRCd (our IRC daemon.) She'd sent me a PM to say that she was implementing an improved version of that feature in the next major release of inspIRCd. | SkipIRC does not have a profit motive. Providing a useful service is the goal, not the means by which ads are put in front of viewers. We don't have shareholders, and we don't have automated support systems designed to fob off user issues. Nor do we have PR flacks whose job it is to deflect inquires. Anyone can come to me with concerns, problems, suggestions, or questions, and many do. If there's an outage, there are a dozen people with my number who'll wake me up to fix it. If a disgruntled channel staff member on SkipIRC staged a takeover, it'd most likely be resolved within a few minutes. When a similar situation occurred with the SCP Wiki's Tumblr account, the only solution was a manual, laborious deletion of the account's content. | SkipIRC does not have a profit motive.
